„Movements, Marionettes and Material in Myanmar“ – this is the motto behind the figure theatre piece “The Hidden Ghosts of Myanmar”. As indicated in the title, this piece is about the ghosts of Myanmar, and their relations to its people. These young artists from Myanmar engage with the ghosts in a variety of ways – both personally, socially, spiritually and politically. The artists not only express themselves using self-made puppets, but also through different kinds of materials, which they explored in a 1-week workshop with Alice Gottschalk and Scott Koehler.
The longstanding tradition of Myanmar puppetry meets contemporary art, creating an extraordinary fusion between the two. This unique piece will be performed at the Goethe Villa on the 20. and 21. of November. Join us and allow these young artists to whisk you into the world of the hidden ghosts of Myanmar.
The project is sponsored by the German French cultural fund, which was founded on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Élysée Agreement to support cooperation between both countries. The Myanmar puppeteers are working together with the German-French artist duo Alice Gottschalk and Scott Koehler, both members of UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionette). The project is organised by the Institut Francaise de Birmanie and the Goethe-Institut.
