About the exhibition
Blurring the lines between the surrealism, figurative and abstract expressionism, Jonni Cheatwood has developed a kinetically evocative and imaginative, pictorial language to compliment his personal graffiti like writing system one which closely mimics that of an action painter.
Jonni Cheatwood’s newest body of work is an exploration of nostalgia and tension. Combining materials — found, gifted, and custom-made — Cheatwood creates a patchwork backdrop of sewn fabric as the basis for his expressionist canvases. The backgrounds for his new works are comprised of found fabrics with nostalgic prints, Los Angeles fashion district finds, and old photographs from his grandfather-in-law from the 1950’s and 1960’s printed onto fabric, stretched and distorted. On top of these patchwork canvases, Cheatwood lays down acrylic and oil paint through subconscious gestures working both intuitively and strategically across the assemblages. Layered with nostalgic meaning, the works explore the tension between marks, mediums, colors, composition, and time.
About the artist
Jonni Cheatwood, born in 1986 in Thousand Oaks, California, USA. He attended Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, USA. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California, USA.
Playing a strategic game upon the surface of his stitched canvases, Cheatwood plays a set of decisions in a step-by-step rejoinder to each possible move. The process begins with a sewing machine, then to the floor, the walls and back to the floor, as he simultaneously moves from canvas to canvas, leaving behind the detritus of his own accidental marks and spilled materials, leaving his history as if he is formulating his own autobiography with fabric with bold colors, clean lines and raw power that all merge into a rough and ready approach, that somehow remains elegant and visually seductive.
Cheatwood has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions globally including at the Rema Hort Mann Foundation, New York, NY, USA, and at various galleries and museums internationally such as, Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles, CA, USA (2016); TW Fine Art, Brisbane, Australia (2018); MAKASIINI CONTEMPORARY, Turku, Finland (2018); BEERS London, London, UK (2018) and Over the Influence, Hong Kong (2018)
